This guy is a star, the jewel of the film. Everybody adores him.
He's only 8. He's bright. He's a top student in his school but that's not the reason why I chose him. I've liked him from the moment I saw his photograph that was sent to me. I thought hey, this guy looks exactly like the character I have in mind, poor and dirty with an expression on his face that deserves pity. But he turns out to be a rich kid who's father drives a benz to pick him up after rehearsals.
I was having difficulty choosing him or another 'veteran' child actor, who's talent and ability to act and perform is unquestionable. To choose Zi Jiang is a gamble, and I took it because I had this deep feeling, or intuition that he might be the one despite his zero knowledge in performing/acting. He proves me right. He's managed to do it.
I think he made a star out of himself, overnight. Here comes Wong Zi Jiang, watch out for him.

The first time I saw Ming Wei during auditions, I thought he looks a little like James Lee. A young James Lee. But of course he's much better looking than James, no doubt. Hahaha!
He's not a bright student. He's a bit slow when it comes to understanding what's happening in the film and his memorization of his lines is terrible, amazingly terrible.
He's very in touch with his emotions even at this young age. That's one thing I like about him. I remember his headmistress from school came to us(after knowing that Ming Wei got the role) and told us about how excited and happy she is for him because he proved to the rest that even though he's weak in his studies, he could excel in something else. I'm happy for him too. For a kid with zero knowledge and experience in acting, he did not bad, not bad at all!

We shot a cheesy 'music video' of Mamat singing and dancing among the headless female mannequins in his work place. He's excited because he finds out that his wife is pregnant(again). Too bad the music video is not featured in the final cut of the film.
