Liew Seng Tat's first feature film "Flower in the Pocket" had just won its fifth award, Jury prize (Lotus du Jury) in 10th Deauville Asian Film Festival, France.

Liew Seng Tat was born on 30th September 1979, in a rather notorious area called Jinjang. He is known for making dark comedy - hilarious, ridiculous, absurd and yet touching. Since his first short film was shown in the Malaysian Shorts series in the Malaysian Film Club, he had never failed to win the audience award.

He get a lot of attention with his first short film "Bread skin with strawberry Jam". The film won Best Short Film in the 8th MVA, and in the following year, he win almost all the top prizes for short films categories, with his "Not Cool" and "Flower".

FLOWER IN THE POCKET is his first feature length film.

刘城达第一部电影, "口袋里的花", 在第10届法国杜维尔亚洲电影节里赢得了评委会奖。这也是这部电影的第五个奖项。

刘城达出生于1979年9月30日。他出生在一个不怎么出名，叫作增江的地区。制造拥有黑色幽默的电影，是他闻名的原因。他的电影除了搞笑、荒谬与荒唐之外，其实也有它感动的一面。自从他的第一部短片在Malaysian Film Club里的Malaysia Shorts series中播出后，他就从来没有在观众奖中落选过。

他的第一部短片"草莓面包"受到很多的瞩目。这部短片也在第八届电影录像节里赢得了最佳短片。之后，他也凭着短片"Not Cool"和"Flower"，横扫短片类几乎所有重要的奖项。

"口袋里的花"是他的第一部长篇电影。

"At least he's only mentally retarded," 。
mother of Liew Seng Tat recalled.
刘城达的妈妈在回忆时说:"幸好，他只是迟钝而已".

BORN in 1979, the third of five siblings, Liew Seng Tat grew up amidst plenty of love, lots of laughter, and frequent life-threatening family feuds involving kitchen knives.

He hardly said a word in the first year of his life. His mother, half suspecting that he was mute and mentally-retarded, was very relieved when he finally spoke at length on his first birthday.

"At least he's only mentally retarded," Mrs Liew recalled with a smile.

他出生于1979年，是五个兄弟姐妹中的老三。刘城达是在充满大爱、笑声和家庭纠纷频密(有时还恐怖到涉及厨房刀)的环境中长大的。

刘妈妈说城达在一出世至一岁时都不怎么会说话。她还曾经怀疑他是哑巴或迟钝的。当他在一岁生日当天终于说出话来时，刘妈妈才感到欣慰。

刘妈妈回顾时笑着说:"幸好，他只是迟钝而已"。

Much later, Liew graduated from the Multimedia University in Cyberjaya, majoring in 3D animation.

"Doesn't say much about the university," said his mother, raising her eyebrows.

After earning a living from it for three years in a local studio, Liew's interest in animation waned, and he turned to film. His first live action film, Bread Skin with Strawberry Jam, won the Best Short Film award at the Malaysian Video Awards in 2003. His second film, Not Cool, again won the highest accolade the following year.

When asked if she thought her son's streak of success in filmmaking is proof that he's not retarded after all, Mrs Liew merely laughed and then spat into a nearby drain.

后来，刘城达在赛城的多媒体大学毕业。主修是3D动画。

刘妈妈提高眉毛说:"我不想说太多有关大学的事."

在本地的工作室谋生三年后，城达对动画的兴趣慢慢减少，因而转去从事电影行业。他第一部实践的电影"口袋里的花"，在2003年的大马独立电影展里赢得了最佳短片奖。而他的第二部电影"Not Cool",也在翌年拿下了最高荣誉奖。

刘妈妈被问说:"城达在制造电影方面这么成功，是否足以证明其实他并不是迟钝的?" 刘妈妈听后差点没笑出声来，然后往旁边的排水沟里吐了口水。

Congratulations to Mr Liew on making such a moving film! I will definitely be looking forward to this film at GSC when it comes out.

However, I read in The Sun (17/12/2007) today that what will be shown in the cinema is a censored version, much to my dismay. Is there a possibility for this film to be released on DVD someday with all the scenes intact as well as special features which includes Mr.Liew's thoughts on making the film as well as interviews with the two child actors on their experience making this film. I would certainly be the first in line to buy this DVD if there are plans to release it on DVD.

I sincerely believe that Mr Liew, together with other crop of local filmmakers such as James Lee, Amir Muhammad, Ho Yuhang, Yasmin Ahmad and Tan Chui Mui are Malaysia's golden generation of independent filmmakers. You guys are the future of filmmaking in Malaysia and I wish to let you know that you all have a ready market locally and internationally who will support all of you even if the mainstream (FINAS, Film Censorship Board among others) doesn't.

Keep up the good work and please let us fans know any great film updates from you guys!

Dear Philip and Maria,

Thanks for leaving us your thoughts n comments.

I didn't cut-out those scenes that needed to be censored, I pixelated them instead. SO the whole film is pretty much still 'complete'.

Yeah do check out the dvd when it's released(sometime next year). COz there'll be some extra materials like 'the making of', deleted scenes and some promo videos.

Thanks for your positive attitude towards our works. It's definitely a big encouragement for us.

I bought a transparent plastic rod from a manufacturer last month.

I intended to use it to place aeroplanes on when
basing them for my war gaming, so rather than having to disguise a piece
of wire or solid rod, its transparency would contradict the need.
