Flower in The Pocket︱A Film by Liew Seng Tat

There is a great danger in judging Liew Seng Tat's maiden effort - for it will feel like you are judging children. As the man himself concedes openly, filming children in movies is a forewarned pitfall if you believe the things they tell you in film school. Having not been to one, Liew can at least be proud about being part of the oft-cited Malaysian New Wave of filmmaking, and that his quiet offering "Flower In The Pocket" has a strong case for having won some awards at Pusan earlier this year.

I have posted about Seng Tat's victory for FLOWER IN THE POCKET at the PUSAN FILM FESTIVAL last month, and I finally got to catch the film at its press screening yesterday. It's hard to review a film properly when you know the filmmaker personally, lauding it too much will make it seem as if you're being nice to a friend, dissing it will mean that you are self-consciously trying to avoid the former.

FLOWER in the Pocket is a poignant tale of two brothers making their way through a childhood devoid of parental love.
The boys, Mah Li Ahh (Lim Ming Wei) and Mah Li Ohm (Wong Zi Jiang) are amusingly self-sufficient; they feed, dress and take themselves to school each day.

Someone famous once said never to work with animals and children. But Flower In The Pocket has both. And no worries here; director Liew Seng Tat is pretty adept at handling both species.
