Liew Seng Tat's double win of the New Currents Award and the KNN Audience Award at PIFF with Flower in the Pocket tends to overshadow the substantial Malaysian presence there this year.
Liew Seng Tat's debut film FLOWER IN THE POCKET won the Pusan Int Film Festival's New Currents Award and the KNN Audience Award.

Although they didn't come with cake, a few other films have emerged as early festival favorites. From Malaysia comes Seng Tat Liew's "Flower in the Pocket," in which two brothers, left to their own devices by their hard-working dad, get up to all sorts of good natured mischief. Writer/director James Lee, whose own film "Waiting for Love" is playing later in the festival, gives a nicely understated performance as the father, but the film really belongs to its two young stars, who are tons of fun to watch as they run around town, exploring, playing and bringing new life to the old adage that "boys will be boys."

BUSAN, South Korea -- Two films premiering at Pusan have been selected to go on to Rotterdam, building on the relationship between Asia's largest film festival and its older international peers.
Two stories intertwine here, as a pair of neglected little boys take care of each other day and night in a small flat, and a man slaves away in the surreal setting of a mannequin factory. The quaint humour may not always translate, but the lensing finds quirky beauty in a poor quarter of Kuala Lumpur. Patient viewers will wait for Flower to blossom from something slow and gentle into a moving portrait of love and loneliness.

Synopsis:
Li Ahh and Li Ohm grow up motherless. They are neglected by their father Sui, a workaholic who spends the bulk of his time mending broken mannequins in his workshop. While he shuts himself out from the world, the two brothers roam the streets, get into fights and other troubles in school but for all they want is just love and to be loved.

By now it's not surprising to find another talented young filmmaker among Malaysia's Chinese community, yet Liew Seng Tat's first feature is constantly, quietly, astonishing. A little film with big, deep pockets, Flower is equal parts childhood idyll, absurdist comedy, gentle social satire and family mystery.
Bottom Line: A playful and gently moving depiction of the blossoming of a father-son relationship in Malaysia.
