It is strange to be in KL and surrounded by a group of Malaysian who speaks French and very little English. All the students are trained to be French teacher. They are going to France for 3 years language studies in this coming September. The students read a lot of french literature, but they are unfamiliar with French cinema.
Mui talked briefly to the students about French New Wave and some of the contemporary French filmmakers. She also showed them film clips from a few french films. Which the students were seeing them for the first time, and they were of course impressed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Jean-luc Godard, Leo carax, and other filmmaker. Mui's favourite contemporary French filmmakers is Bruno Dumont, and the student were not so impressed.
Later, the 18 students were divided into 5 groups. Each group need to make a short film with the following limitation:
1. No music can be used.
2. Not more than 3 characters.
3. Not more than 3 location.
4. Must be exactly 7 shots.
They were given the assignment on Saturday 9pm, and they should come into the editing room at 12pm Sunday, hence they had less than 15 hours to shoot the film. Here are the outcome. A warning for those who don't understand French, the subtitles are in French!!!
