The Malaysian feature film LOVE CONQUERS ALL by Tan Chui Mui was just announced as one of the four winners of the main Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in The Netherlands. It receives 10,000 Euros and guaranteed screening on the Dutch TV channel VPRO.
"Classical in style and structure, it is a film which speaks to the heart," said the five-person jury in a joint statement.
The jury consisted of Toronto Film Festival chief Piers Handling, Chinese director Lou Ye, British artist/filmmaker Isaac Julien, Dutch actress Maria Kraakman and Portuguese director Teresa Villaverde.
The Tiger Award is for first- or second-time feature film directors and this year had a field of 15 finalists from all over the world.
This is the third major award for LOVE CONQUERS ALL after it swept the main New Currents Award as well as FIPRESCI Prize at the Pusan International Film Festival, which had come with a US$30,000 prize as well.
Another Malaysian film, DANCING BELLS by Deepak Kumaran Menon, received the Special Mention for the
NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) Award. DANCING BELLS had made its world premiere in Rotterdam and has yet to screen in Malaysia.
