Living Quietly︱What Do I Know?

Malaysian filmmaker Tan Chui Mui has been selected for the 14th session of Cinefondation Cannes Residency, along with 5 other young filmmakers from around the world. Ahe would be developing her new script, LIVING QUIETLY. She is the only representative selected from Asia. The residency is organised by the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
Since 2000, the Festival Residence provides accommodation and support to 12 selected young directors to help them prepare their first or second feature film. A jury presided by a film director sits twice a year, selecting these young filmmakers on the basis of their short films or even first feature film, and the merits of their feature film project.
The 14th session of residency would start from 28th February, and end on 15th July. During their 4-and-a-half-month stay in Paris, they work on the writing of their feature film project, have meetings with professionals and try, with the support of the Cannes Film Festival, to bring their project to co-production status.
The Residence du Festival welcomes every year a dozen young directors who work there on their first or second fictional feature film project, in two sessions lasting four and a half months (from October 1st to mid February, and from the end of February to mid July).
Since its creation in 2000, the Residence has welcomed more than seventy filmmakers from more than forty different countries.
It makes available to them a place of residence in the heart of Paris, a personalised programme accompanying the writing of their scripts, and a collective programme of forums with film industry professionals. Nearly fifty filmmakers emerging from the great halls of this "Villa Medicis" of cinema have seen their films selected by international festivals and distributed in theatres.
The residents equally benefit from:
* a 800-euro grant per month;
* free access to a large number Paris cinemas;
* French lessons (optional);
* the possibility of attending festivals during their stay.
The selection of the residents by a jury, presided by a director or a motion-picture celebrity, is based on the quality of their already made shorts - or first feature film, as well as on the interest of the feature film project in the course of being written, and on the candidates' motivation.

THE RESIDENCE PROGRAMME
The Residence offers its laureates the opportunity of devoting themselves to the writing of their feature films in a privileged setting in the heart of Paris.
Over the four and a half months of their stay at the Residence, every filmmaker is accompanied in the development of his or her script, and advised in the transition to production.
The programme also includes a series of collective forums with industry professionals.
The individual programme
The Residence provides continuous follow-up during the writing of the directors' scripts.
A presentation booklet of each project is offered to producers and distributors at appointments set up within the framework of various festivals: Cinemart, Rotterdam, Locarno, and, of course, Cannes.
The directors can likewise pursue the writing of their scripts at the Moulin d'Ande, with whom agreement has been made for a complementary stay.
The collective programme
In complement to individual follow-up, the Residence organises a collective programme of forums with directors, professionals and representatives of cinema institutions.
These forums help the directors gain deeper insight into coproduction systems both in France and Europe.
The first sessions demonstrated the importance of sharing experience between young directors. The Residence increases the opportunity for encounters and exchanges during their stay: going to cinemas, visiting Paris' heritage sites and participating in festivals, all go to enrich these exchanges.
Following their stay, the Residence prolongs its proactive work with directors, from assistance with translation to advice as concerns production.
