Back in 2007, the New Straits Times ran a photo of villagers carrying a house on their shoulders. It was to help Abu Hassan Ahmad, a farmer who decided to move closer to his mother-in-law in order to care for her poor health. A total of 150 villagers carried his house half-a-kilometre to the new site. They then helped to clear the land at the new location. Such feat was a common practice in the older days, especially in rural areas and small towns.
Inspired by this event, Liew Seng Tat and geng, with support from Five Arts Centre, are inviting urbanites to rediscover the gotong-royong spirit in the Klang Valley. The public are invited to a parade and to move a specially-designed house along Jalan Ipoh to its final destination: Urbanscapes 2010! Once the house reaches the festival grounds at KLPac, the house will be converted into an open stage for anyone who wants to perform.
