EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL
The Cannes Film Festival (le Festival de Cannes), founded in 1939, is widely considered to be the world's most prestigious film festival. It became extremely important for critical and commercial interests and for European attempts to sell films on the basis of their artistic quality.
The Venice Film Festival (Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica di Venezia) is the oldest film festival in the world. It began in 1932 as the "Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica" and since then has taken place every year in late August or early September on the island of the Lido, Venice, Italy.
The Berlin International Film Festival, also called the "Berlinale (help·info)" (in reference to the Biennale at Venice), ranks alongside Venice and Cannes as Europe's leading film festival. It is the film festival with most visitors (admissions) worldwide. It is held annually in February (in 2007 from February 8 until February 18) and has been held since 1951. The jury places special emphasis on representing films from all over the world. The awards are called the Golden and Silver Bears (the Bear is the symbol of Berlin).
The Locarno International Film Festival is an international film festival held annually in the city of Locarno, Switzerland in the canton of Ticino. The festival was founded in 1946, and is held every August. One feature of the festival is the open-air screening space on Locarno's Piazza Grande (central square), with room for 8,000 spectators. The top prize in the festival is the "Golden Leopard" or the "Pardo d'oro," awarded to the best film. Other awards include the Silver Leopard (second place), and the Bronze Leopard (for best actor and actress).
The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is arguably in the Big Five film festivals in Europe (alongside Cannes, Venice, Berlin and Locarno). The festival has profiled itself as a promotor of alternative, innovative and non-commercial films, with an emphasis on the Far East and developing countries. Not only famous for the unique variety of international films (it's hard to find such a diverse festival), it is also famous for being a visitor-friendly one. No red carpets for the filmmakers and directors, but mingling with the crowd is the motto.
